Temperature Setting

Most equipment manufacturers, installers and local authorities recommend 120º as a safe and comfortable hot water temperature setting. If you chose to adjust your temperature setting, you should check your owners manual for instructions. If you do not have the owners manual, check the manufacturers’ website for a downloadable copy.

Temperature Relief  Valve

The function of the temperature relief valve is to prevent dangerous temperature rise and overpressure of the water heater tank. The T/P relief valve is located on the side of the water heater. The valve will be connected to the top of the water heater, no more than 6” from the top of the water heater. The T/P valve should have a discharge pipe extending from the valve to within 6 to 12 inches of the floor or overflow pan. In the event of a temperature or pressure problem, the valve will release. If you see water coming from this pipe, approach with caution, the water may be extremely hot.

Maintenance

1. Twice a year the drain valve should be opened to remove sediment which may build up inside

     the water heater.

2. The temperature pressure relief valve should be tested at least once a year.

3. Check you owners manual for any additional maintenance recommended by the manufacturer.

If you are not comfortable performing preventative maintenance on your water heater, you

should contact a licensed professional.
